Woods come in two basic flavors, Hard and Soft. One would assume that this means that one type is harder and stronger then the other.  Not so, the  names refer more to the type of tree the wood came from. Evergreens, pine, fir, etc. are considered soft woods., Leaf bearing trees are considered hard woods.  An example you all may be familiar with is Balsa wood. One of the weakest and most pliable  woods you can find, it is, since it comes from a leaf bearing tree, classified as a hard wood.

Pine, the traditional material of colonial cradle makers, is still not a bad choice for today's cradles.
